Pediatricians warn expanding toy ball can create safety hazards for small children.

The New York Times (9/18, O'Connor) "Well" blog reports that toy balls known as Water Balz, which are capable of expanding in size when doused in water, are popular among many children, but some pediatricians warn that they can pose a safety hazard to small children. According to the blog post, "in a report published this week in the journal Pediatrics, doctors in Texas documented the case of an infant who swallowed one of the toys and required surgery to have it removed. Although the object was the size of a small marble when it was swallowed, by the time it reached her digestive tract it had expanded enough to cause a blockage in her intestines."
