8 Babies Exposed to TB at California Hospital

The AP (9/12, Nirappil) reports that in California, "eight infants were exposed to tuberculosis at the neonatal intensive care unit [NICU] of a Sacramento hospital, but health officials said Tuesday it's unlikely the babies will contract the disease." The infants "were doing well and weren't exhibiting any symptoms of tuberculosis but will receive antibiotic treatment as a precaution, Sacramento County Public Health Officer Olivia Kasirye said." Physicians will also "conduct follow-up tests in six months to see if the children are infected."

The Sacramento (CA) Business Journal (9/12, Robertson, Subscription Publication) reports, "Public health officials in Sacramento County are working with Methodist Hospital in South Sacramento to investigate" the situation. According to county health officials, "a visitor who was later isolated and treated for TB spent time in the unit from August 23 to Sept. 3. Parents of exposed babies are being contacted, while others potentially exposed will be contacted within the next few days."
