NY Attorney General sues online tobacco websites

The AP (2/3, Eltman) reported that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has filed lawsuits against six website operators who are in violation of a New York law banning the online sale of tobacco to customers in the state. According to the AP, Schneiderman "is seeking $5,000 in fines for each violation, as well as an injunction barring the companies from future sales ... but the attorney general said his goal wasn't to collect fines, but to stop the shipments." Michael Seilback, a spokesman for the American Lung Association said "a high cigarette price is the single largest deterrent to kids starting to smoke and getting adults to quit."
